“I've known I'm ADHD since childhood, and very recently learned I'm autistic as well. My artwork has been a process of bringing beauty from pain.
It started with watching old Bob Ross videos while lying in a hospital bed recovering from knee surgery. He kept saying that anyone could do this, so I got some paints and it turns out he was right. Painting became my way to see mountains and nature while feeling trapped in the few places my crutches could take me.
Then years later I found myself in a place of deep exhaustion, sometimes just lying on the floor for hours, and daydreaming about ending it all. In this burnout I learned I have autism as well.
At this point, with little energy to give to anything I enjoy, I had barely painted anything in a year but I got back into it therapeutically, forcing myself at first, and it's been a life-giving step to rebuild what I felt like I lost. Not even ‘rebuild’ but to build a life that fits me so much better than the mask I used to wear.”
